Dear NJEA Member/Friend of Education:

April 2004

Local school budgets are being presented to the state's voters on Tuesday, April 20. As one of over 700 NJEA members living in the Phillipsburg area (i.e. zip code areas 08865, 08886 & 08804), the Phillipsburg Education Association is asking you to be certain to get out and vote in favor of your local school budget this day.

The chart below shows how our local school budgets have fared over the past three years.

When you note the small margins of defeat in many of these elections (ex. Lopatcong's school budget was defeated by four votes in 2002 and Alpha's by 12 votes last year) and you realize the large number of NJEA members living in our immediate area, it becomes obvious that we have the power to pass all the school budgets.

We also need to be aware that the school budgets that are passed sometimes barely make it. (ex. Greenwich's budget passed by only 11 votes and Pohatcong's by 24 votes last year.) This information should make us realize, as a philosopher once noted, that "Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty."

If every NJEA member, family and friends were to vote in favor of the local school budgets on April 20, every budget would pass by overwhelming numbers.

If you are not certain where to vote, polling locations and addresses can be found on the back of this letter. All Warren County polls are open from 2-9 p.m. Results of the votes will be available on Wednesday, April 21, on the PEA website (http://www.pburgea.org).

Respectfully,

Charles Nowalk, chairperson
PEA ad hoc School Budgets Committee
